Boston Chops brings steak to Downtown Crossing with the renovation of an historic two-story bank space complete with the original plaster ceiling, marble walls, and both vault doors. As a more elevated experience than its South End sister location, we pulled certain elements from the original that best complemented the unique existing conditions of new space, like the leather banquettes, butcher block floor, and elongated bar. The lack natural light required the use of indirect lighting throughout, including the wash of the existing marble, and the inability to penetrate the plaster ceiling forced creative solutions like the buffet lamps lining the bar and a “forest of street lamps” at the top of the existing marble staircase that connects the two floors. The space also boasts the industry’s first Instagram Table designed in collaboration with photographer Andy Ryan to provide a locally-controlled lighting system for influencers to perfectly capture each plate. Downstairs, guests are drawn through the restored vault door into the steel-lined vault housing the wine room and two private dining rooms.
