BOSTON CHOPS brings steak to Downtown Crossing with the renovation of a historic two-story bank space complete with the original plaster ceiling, marble walls, and both vault doors. As a more elevated experience than its South End sister location, certain elements, like the leather banquettes, butcher block floor, and elongated bar, were incorporated to retain a nod to the original. The lack natural light and an impenetrable original plaster ceiling required the creative use of artificial light throughout, including the grazing of the existing marble, the buffet lamps lining the bar and a “forest of street lamps” at the top of the existing marble staircase. Downstairs, guests are drawn through the restored vault door into the steel-lined vault housing the wine room and two private dining rooms.
